Common Hair Myths Busted

"I brush my hair when it is still wet.  Does the same thing as a comb right?"
Wrong!  When your hair is wet it is at its most vulnerable.  Brushing through the tangles will pull and stretch the hair, causing potential snappage - eek.

To avoid the 'snap factor' and become tangle free ensure you gently comb through the lengths with a wide tooth comb.  Start from the underneath, and comb through section by section.  This technique will ensure the hair has much more shine, is stronger and generally much happier!

.

"Smoke and Steam when I Iron my hair...this can't be good?!"
Always, always, always use a heat protection product when using any heating tools on your hair.  Imagine putting a pot on the hot element with no butter in it...BURN!  A hot iron on your hair with no product will have the same effect.

Some heat protection products will steam slightly when the iron is applied - don't be alarmed, as it is simply the nature of that product.  Ensure your hair is bone dry prior to ironing - any dampness will also result in some smoking action!

Hair irons can reach temperatures of up to 280 degrees, so protecting your precious hair is paramount.  Be guided by your stylist for the most suitable type of protective product for you.
"I can cure my split ends without cutting my hair"
Symptoms:  'White' tips on the hair, dull, brittle hair that tangles easily...and of course when you spot one strand of hair that ends as two!

Diagnosis:  This is the common worst enemy of our long hair friends - split ends.

Prescription:  The only TRUE treatment for your split end problem?  To have your ends trimmed. Maintaining regular trims will ensure the ends of your hair remain healthy and strong.  We recommend a trim every 5 - 8 weeks depending on your style.

There are various products that will certainly 'seal' the ends, and make the hair appear shinier and healthier, however the best treatment and prevention is a regular visit to your fave hair stylist!

"I heard I shouldn't wash my hair before a colour or special occasion hair up?"
When you wash your hair is not going to make a difference to the colour result.   We suggest to wash as you would normally, unless it is extremely oily (wash the morning before you come) or if you have an extremely sensitive scalp (don't wash on the same day).

In regard to hair up's – chat to us first! We will find out when your hair looks at its best. Otherwise, wash the night before. Use your usual styling product or heat protection, but refrain from ironing your hair too straight if you are wanting curls for your special event

"Is it a no-no to colour over permed hair, or perm over coloured hair?!"

We have a range of specific perm solutions available to cater for all hair types – coloured and natural.   We recommend a strand test prior to the service to ensure we won’t be compromising the condition of the hair.

"Should I avoid colouring my hair when I am pregnant?"
At Blue Cactus, we believe that the product will not have an effect on the baby – however we are happy to honour your personal preference.   We also have alternative colour options that won’t make any contact with your scalp.
"Eeek,  Nits...I'll never get rid of them!"
Don't panic!  A proven natural prevention is to rinse the hair regularly with Apple cider vinegar. As a treatment we recommend ‘Para-Plus’ which will eradicate the eggs and lice.   You can find this product at the supermarket or pharmacy for around $22.

If we discover any ‘live-stock’ in the hair whilst cutting, we are obliged to conform to the Health Regulations and reschedule the appointment.  Once the hair has been treated 3 times, we are more than happy to proceed with the service! To find out more about the prevention and treatment of head lice visit www.lice.co.nz

.

"Is it true that you can’t chemically straighten hair that has already been straightened?"
This can be a tricky one!   If you have previously had the service at Blue Cactus, then absolutely – we just apply product to the new growth.   However, if you have had the service done elsewhere, we need to know as much as possible about the product that was used to ensure ours will be compatible.   The more detail, the better!   To be sure, we will always perform a strength test on your hair.

"My hair always gets ‘used’ to a shampoo."

It is more likely that the needs of your hair and scalp are changing.   Each time you visit your hairstylist, we will be analysing the hair and scalp to ensure you are on the right programme.

.

"I have been having handfuls of hair fall out..should I be worried?"
Everyone will lose around 100 hairs per day – more in Spring and Autumn.   If there is a significant reduction in density talk to your Stylist about hair loss treatments/prevention.   We offer a range of premium hair loss products, which slow the process down and promote new hair growth.

Most common culprits of hair loss? Stress, medication, environmental effects, hormones and diet.

"Getting my hair cut regularly will make it grow faster."
Having your hair cut more regularly is not proven to make your hair grow faster, however your hair will most certainly appear longer, thicker and healthier.   We recommend a trim every 5-8 weeks, depending on your style.

"After I have had my colour done, how soon afterwards should I wash my hair?  I heard a week!"
We recommend treatments and home hair care that will never compromise your colour, however waiting 24hours will ensure an optimum result – especially if you have a chosen a ‘high fashion’ or vibrant colour.

"It doesn't matter how I use my shampoo and conditioner...it'll work anyway!"

Always cleanse your hair twice – the first shampoo is for the scalp, the second one cleanses the hair.   Conditioners and masques are very concentrated, so only a small amount is required.   Ensure only the mid – lengths and the ends are being treated, and try to leave on the hair for 2-3mins.
